Domestic Manufacturing Developer Position Summary:
SI Jacobson Manufacturing is looking for an organized and detail-oriented Manufacturing Developer to lead the manufacturing development process for the production of bags, soft cases, and related sewn goods. This role serves as a critical bridge between Design, Manufacturing, purchasing, and Sales, ensuring seamless communication, on-time delivery, and successful execution from concept to first production.
The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the manufacturing process, a technical background in bag construction, experience managing product timelines, and a proven ability to analyze and quote existing product RFQs as well as translate new concepts into manufactured products.
Product Development & Project Management
Support the entire domestic product development process for soft goods — from initial concept to production-ready prototypes to first production run.
Support the Design team in creating manufacturing tech packs and Bills of Materials (BOMs), ensuring all components — materials, hardware, and trims — are accurately documented.
Identify sources for raw materials and catalog fabrics, foams, webbings, zippers, buckles, and other components specific to bags and soft cases.
Work with the purchasing team to set up new suppliers and recommend order quantities.
Collaborate with sample makers and factory personnel to build prototypes and iterate on designs.
Collaborate with the sales team to develop timelines and deliverables for all development milestones, including sampling, approvals, and production handoffs.
Manage and provide project routing notes and directions.
Work with the customer service team to set up BOMs and manufacturing steps.
Cross-Functional Coordination
Act as the primary liaison between the Design, Manufacturing, and Sales teams; translating design with intent into actionable specifications.
Host regular cross-functional meetings to align on project status, resolve development challenges, and maintain transparency.
Ensure that design intent, cost targets, and manufacturability are aligned at every development stage.
Manage and communicate timelines across functions (i.e., sales, design, operations).
Manufacturing & Production Support
Communicate BOMs, construction details, and quality expectations clearly to the production team.
Source and price current and new materials; manage material negotiations with suppliers.
Monitor sampling and production schedules to meet lead times, target prices, and delivery targets.
Address and resolve production challenges such as material availability, construction issues, or fit/form concerns.
Work closely with the Production team to communicate project specifications, provide technical support, and ensure quality and consistency in construction.
Hold team members accountable throughout the development process.
Oversee material certifications, inspections, quality standards, and procedures.
Work with the customer service manager to ensure accurate records of domestic materials and ensure safety stock availability.
Sales & Client Support
Support Sales with product specifications, pricing, and development updates for client quoting and presentations.
Respond to customer quote requests by gathering material and labor costs, collaborating with the manufacturing team, and developing accurate pricing estimates.
Participate in customer calls or meetings to provide technical insights and ensure alignment between client needs and production capabilities.
Track and manage custom projects or client-specific developments, ensuring timelines and expectations are met.
Domestic Manufacturing Developer Qualifications:
3–7 years of experience in product development, project management, or production coordination — specifically with bags, cases, or technical soft goods.
Strong knowledge of materials (e.g., Cordura, ballistic nylon, EVA foam, tarpaulin), construction techniques (e.g., RF welding, bar-tack stitching, lamination), and hardware (e.g., zippers, snaps, buckles).
Strong communication and organizational skills; comfortable leading cross-functional discussions.
Proficiency in Excel.
Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with domestic and international manufacturers.
Background in industrial design, product design, or textile engineering is a plus.
Familiarity with small-batch (job shop type) production and scaling to larger volume runs.
